A background check or background investigation is the process of looking up and compiling criminal records, commercial records and financial records of an individual or an organization.
Background checks are often requested by employers on job candidates for employment screening, especially on candidates seeking a position that requires high security or a position of trust, such as in a school, hospital, financial institution, airport, and government. These checks are traditionally administered by a government agency for a nominal fee, but can also be administered by private companies. Background checks can be expensive depending on the information requested. Results of a background check typically include past employment verification, credit history, and criminal history.
These checks are often used by employers as a means of judging a job candidate’s past mistakes, character, and fitness, and to identify potential hiring risks for safety and security reasons. Background checks are also used to thoroughly investigate potential government employees in order to be given a security clearance. However, these checks may sometimes be used for illegal purposes, such as unlawful discrimination (or employment discrimination), identity theft, and violation of privacy.
Checks are frequently conducted to confirm information found on an employment application or résumé/curriculum vitae. One study showed that half of all reference checks done on prospective employees differed between what the job applicant provided and what the source reported. They may also be conducted as a way to further differentiate potential employees and pick the one the employer feels is best suited for the position.
Employers have an obligation to make sure their work environment is safe for all employees and helps prevent other employment problems in the workplace.
Mr chukwuma a banker is married with a son, after child birth his wife who was also a banker needed the service of a nanny, so she could go back to work as she was due.
Out of hastiness they eventually got a nanny.
soon all seemed to be going well, until a point they kept getting reports that they always here the cry of their baby, but the just taught it was a norm for babies to cry, but this reports kept coming until they decided to spy on her. un spying on her they found out that every afternoon the nanny has to smoke and before she does she ties the leg of the baby to the bed so there wont be disturbance from the baby, after which she sleeps up leaving the baby tied up.
they also got to find out that she is addicted to smoking. BUT it wasn’t too late they had to sack her and hand her over to the police, but then they needed another nanny but they wanted to be sure who she really is and what her background was.. so they had to get the service of a background check company
who ran a background check on her and gave a go ahead.
Now mr chukwuma and his wife goes to work happily knowing their on is in safe hands.
Don’t fall victim whatever service you need make sure a background check/claim is ran on them.
